Palm Beach County Road Test Guide (2026): Where to Test, How to Book, and What to Bring

Last verified: November 1, 2026, against the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and Palm Beach County Tax Collector websites. Rules and office services change, so check the linked official pages before your appointment.

This guide is for teens who are ready to move past their learner's license, the parents helping them, and adults getting their first Florida license. It covers who can test, where and how to book in Palm Beach County, what to bring, what your car needs, fees, the English-only rule, and what happens after the test.

Quick answer

  • Book with the Palm Beach County Tax Collector at pbctax.gov/reservations. In-person service is by reservation only, the system is for Palm Beach County residents, and you can book up to 60 days ahead. (Reservations; 2026 Taxpayer Service Guide)
  • Bring a licensed accompanying driver age 21 or older. The Tax Collector requires that driver to accompany the applicant with a vehicle, valid driver license, registration and proof of insurance. (Tax Collector road test instructions)
  • Road tests are given at five Tax Collector service centers: Belle Glade, Delray Beach (South County), Greenacres (Central), Palm Beach Gardens (North County) and Westlake. (official Tax Collector reservations page)
  • The downtown West Palm Beach office (301 N. Olive Ave.) does not give road tests. (Downtown service center)
  • You provide the car. It needs valid registration, proof of insurance and must pass the examiner's safety check. (FLHSMV skills test)
  • The test is in English only. Since February 6, 2026, translation services are not allowed. (FLHSMV announcement)
  • A skills retest costs $20 under FLHSMV's fee schedule. (FLHSMV fees)

Are you eligible to take the road test?

Teens (16 and 17)

Florida says a teen applying for a driver license must (FLHSMV teen requirements):

  • Be at least 16.
  • Have held a learner's license for at least 12 months, or have turned 18, whichever comes first.
  • Have a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult over 21 complete the Certification of Minor Driving Experience form, certifying 50 hours of driving, 10 of them at night.
  • Have no moving violation convictions for one year from the learner's license issue date (one is allowed if adjudication was withheld).
  • Pass the Class E Driving Skills Test.

The Tax Collector's reservation system also says you must hold a learner's license for 12 months or turn 18 before you can schedule a road test reservation. (Get Your First Driver License)

First-time drivers 18 and older

Adults 18+ do not need a learner's license first. You must complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course, a vision test, the Class E Knowledge Exam and the Driving Skills Exam. (Get Your First Driver License; FLHSMV skills test)

Where to take the road test in Palm Beach County

The Palm Beach County Tax Collector's road test booking system listed five testing service centers when checked November 1, 2026. Their addresses appear below. The reservation system controls current location choices and openings; check it before booking. The locations typically operate Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Service center Address
Belle Glade 2976 State Road 15, Belle Glade, FL 33430 (southwest corner of FL 80 and US 441)
Delray Beach / South County 501 South Congress Avenue, Delray Beach, FL 33445
Greenacres / Central Palm Beach 4215 South Military Trail, Greenacres, FL 33463
Palm Beach Gardens / North County 3185 PGA Boulevard, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410
Westlake 16440 Town Center Parkway South, Westlake, FL 33470

Not a road test location: the Downtown West Palm Beach service center at 301 North Olive Avenue. Its page says: "Driver license road tests are NOT available at this location." The 2026 Taxpayer Service Guide says the same. If you live in West Palm Beach, choose one of the five centers above.

Check which services each office offers. Services can change. Before you go, open the center's page from the Tax Collector locations list and check the booking system. The booking system says it lists only locations that currently have openings, so an office may not appear on a given day.

Weather: The Tax Collector suspends road tests when the weather is hazardous. (Locations)

Other testing options

FLHSMV also lets you take the Class E Driving Skills Test with a driver license skills test provider or an authorized third-party administrator. Some high school driver education classes give the test through the Driver Education Licensing Assistance Program (DELAP); ask your high school. (FLHSMV skills test)

How to book your road test

  1. Start at the Tax Collector's official reservations page. Choose the driver license road test workflow. In-person service requires a reservation.
  2. Confirm you are a Palm Beach County resident. The Tax Collector counts you as a resident if you can show a Palm Beach County residential address or proof that you are moving to the county. Non-residents are directed to FLHSMV locations.
  3. Answer the questions. The system tells you what documents and forms you need.
  4. Choose one of the five road test centers, then a date and arrival time. If no locations appear, the booking page says there are no openings at the moment; it suggests checking back periodically.
  5. Bring your confirmation email with its barcode to check in. (2026 Taxpayer Service Guide)

Reservations can be scheduled up to 60 days ahead, subject to available appointment times. For current dates, use the official reservations page. To cancel or reschedule, follow the instructions on that page.

What to bring

Use the document list your reservation gives you. In general, official sources list:

  • A licensed driver age 21 or older to accompany the applicant to the appointment. That person must arrive with the test vehicle and bring their valid driver license, the vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Start Right's licensed instructor meets this accompanying-driver requirement when booked for Road Test Day Support. (Tax Collector road test instructions)
  • Your learner's license (teens).
  • Certification of Minor Driving Experience (teens under 18), signed by a parent, guardian or responsible adult over 21. (FLHSMV teen requirements)
  • Proof of identity, Social Security number and residential address, if you have not given them before. For U.S. citizens that means one original primary ID (such as a certified birth certificate or valid passport), one SSN document, and two different documents showing your Florida address. (FLHSMV What to Bring – U.S. citizens) Non-citizens should use the FLHSMV What to Bring page for their status.
  • TLSAE course completion (first-time drivers who have never had a license anywhere). (FLHSMV skills test)
  • The test car's registration and proof of insurance.
  • Your reservation confirmation email.

Vehicle requirements for the road test

The Tax Collector's guide is direct: "You must provide a vehicle for the driving test." (2026 Taxpayer Service Guide)

FLHSMV says the vehicle must have valid registration, proof of insurance, and pass a basic vehicle inspection by the examiner. The test will not be given if the examiner finds (FLHSMV skills test):

  • A defective or inoperable horn, rear-view mirror, turn signals, steering wheel, brakes, tires, brake lights or taillights
  • No windshield wiper on the driver's side
  • No working headlights
  • Cracked or broken glass that blocks the view
  • An expired tag
  • No doors, or front doors that don't open from both inside and outside
  • Seats that are not fixed in place
  • A vehicle that doesn't let the driver give hand signals when required
  • Jeep-type vehicles without framed canvas or metal doors on hinges with latches
  • A vehicle that doesn't meet bumper height requirements
  • A low-speed vehicle (top speed of 20 to 25 mph)

Also, no other passengers are allowed during the exam.

Tip (instructor advice, not an official rule): The night before, walk around the car with a helper. Check every light, the horn, the wipers and the tag date, and find the registration and insurance card.

Can I use a driving school's car?

FLHSMV's rules are about the vehicle, not who owns it. Any car you bring has to meet the requirements above and pass the examiner's inspection. Whether a training or school car is accepted is up to the testing location, so confirm with that location ahead of time. If a driving school offers its car for test day, ask which testing locations it has confirmed.

What's on the test

FLHSMV lists these maneuvers for the Class E Driving Skills Test (FLHSMV skills test):

  • Three-point turn: turn the car around in a 20–40 foot space.
  • Approach of crossing: get in the proper lane and look in each direction.
  • Yield right-of-way: let pedestrians cross, pull over and stop for emergency vehicles, and don't enter an intersection where you'd block traffic.
  • Straight-in parking: centered in the space, with no part of the car sticking into the traffic lane.
  • Parking on a grade: uphill and downhill, with and without a curb.
  • Stop quickly: a quick, safe stop when the examiner tells you.
  • Backing: back up 50 feet slowly while looking to the rear. Do not use the rear-view mirror or backup camera.
  • Obey stop signs: stop completely before the stop line or crosswalk, and stay stopped until it's safe.
  • Obey traffic signals: approach at a speed that lets you stop if the light changes; on green, wait until the intersection is clear.
  • Signal and turn: signal for the last 100 feet before the turn.
  • Passing: look ahead and behind before passing.
  • Stay in the proper lane: drive in the right lane except on one-way streets; change lanes only when safe.
  • Follow at a safe distance: at least four seconds.
  • Proper posture: both hands on the wheel, elbow not resting in the window.

Common mistakes to avoid

Based on the official test items

Each of these goes against a specific FLHSMV maneuver or vehicle rule listed above:

  • Rolling through a stop sign, or stopping past the stop line or crosswalk.
  • Using the backup camera or mirror during the 50-foot backing maneuver.
  • Following closer than four seconds.
  • Signaling late. FLHSMV calls for the last 100 feet before the turn.
  • Driving with one hand or with an elbow on the window.
  • Pulling into the stall crooked, or leaving part of the car in the lane.
  • Bringing a car that fails inspection: expired tag, a burned-out brake light, cracked windshield.
  • Bringing a passenger along. None are allowed during the test.
  • Missing paperwork, such as the Certification of Minor Driving Experience or proof of insurance.

Instructor advice (not official rules)

  • Practice in the car you will test in, so the mirrors, signals and size feel familiar.
  • Practice the three-point turn and the 50-foot back-up until you can do them without the camera.
  • Plan to arrive early for check-in.
  • If you get nervous, slow down and say the steps to yourself: mirror, signal, look, go.

If you'd like a professional to check these skills first, Start Right's private lessons are built for that.

Road test fees

FLHSMV sets these fees (FLHSMV fees):

Item Fee
Original Class E license (includes learner's license) $48.00
Skill (road) retest $20.00
Knowledge retest $10.00
Tax collector service fee (may apply to any credential issued at a tax collector office) $6.25

FLHSMV notes that veterans who provide proof of veteran status are not charged the $6.25 service fee for certain transactions. Fees are set by Florida law and can change, so confirm them on the FLHSMV page or in your reservation.

English-only testing

On January 30, 2026, FLHSMV announced that starting February 6, 2026, all driver license knowledge and skills exams are given only in English. That covers every license class and oral exams too. Translation services are not allowed for knowledge or skills exams, and printed exams in other languages were removed. (FLHSMV announcement)

The Palm Beach County Tax Collector says the same: "Exams are conducted in English Only. External translation services are no longer permitted." (Get Your First Driver License)

Tip (instructor advice): On the road test the examiner gives spoken directions such as "turn left at the next light," "pull over," and "stop quickly." Practice following those directions in English before test day. A Spanish-speaking instructor can explain things in Spanish during lessons, but the test itself is in English with no interpreter. Spanish-speaking families can read our road test page in Spanish.

What happens after the test

If you pass

The examiner explains any mistakes you made once the test is over. If you passed with an authorized third-party provider, FLHSMV says you can surrender your learner's license at your local service center to get your Class E license. (FLHSMV skills test)

Drivers who are 16 or 17 get a restricted license (Get Your First Driver License):

  • Age 16: may drive between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.
  • Age 17: may drive between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m.
  • At other times they need a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat, unless they are driving to or from work.

At 18 there are no hour limits. You can get a full unrestricted license if you have had no major traffic convictions (such as DUI, drag racing or reckless driving) in the previous 12 months.

If you don't pass

FLHSMV says customers who fail are asked to study or practice before coming back for a retest. The retest fee is $20. Book a new reservation the same way you booked the first one. (FLHSMV skills test; FLHSMV fees)

Random re-tests for third-party passes

Under section 322.56(3)(b) and (e), Florida Statutes, anyone who passes the knowledge or skills test with a third-party administrator may be randomly picked for a free, mandatory re-test without notice. If you pass the re-test at a driver license or tax collector office, you get your license. If you fail it, you pay a re-exam fee at your next attempt. (FLHSMV skills test)
